Peavey Launches VTM Preamp Pedal
Peavey has introduced the VTM Preamp Pedal, a pedal version of the preamp from the legendary VTM 60 and VTM 120 amplifiers, which are notable for their aggressive aesthetics and firm response that defined American metal in the late 1980s. This release is part of the new Legacy Series, created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the manufacturer.
Dynamic Behavior Mimicking Original VTM Amps
The aim of Peavey was to replicate the same dynamic behavior of the original VTM in a pedal format, utilizing TransTube technology, which is already known for convincingly simulating the attack, compression, and saturation of a tube stage.
Eight DIP Switches for Gain Character Adjustment
A key feature of the VTM Preamp is the set of eight DIP switches that allow users to modify the gain level, frequency contour, and degree of compression. When all switches are off, the pedal delivers a more restrained tone with a British touch. Activating the switches adds layers of saturation and changes the response, recreating the modified behavior that many guitarists employed on the original VTM amps.
The proposal is to offer a highly customizable module capable of ranging from vintage drive to a more muscular crunch, reaching gain levels inspired by the primitive metal sound of the era.
Construction Designed for Real-World Stage Use
Peavey invested in a robust construction for the pedal. The chassis is made from cast aluminum, with jacks, potentiometers, and switching components selected for durability during tours. The pedal features silent bypass, preventing clicks when turned on or off, and operates on a 9V power supply, while internally activating high voltage to ensure greater headroom.
The circuit includes a passive three-band EQ and can operate with either instrument or line-level output, allowing direct connection to interfaces, mixers, or effects loops. For those looking to make the pedal the core of a compact setup, this flexibility is highly beneficial.

A Direct Alternative to Vintage Amps
The introduction of the VTM Preamp caters to guitarists seeking the raw sound of the original VTM models without the burden of a heavy head or reliance on old amplifiers. It also fits well within modern pedalboard setups, serving as a dedicated preamp or primary saturation source.
For those who have heard about the raw and uncompressed character of the VTM but have never had access to one, the pedal aims to fill that gap, now featuring modern reliability and a reduced footprint.
