Paul Reed Smith’s Initial Intentions

Paul Reed Smith, the founder of PRS Guitars, stated that his original intention was not to create his own brand. Instead, he aimed to build guitars for established manufacturers. In a recent interview, Smith shared that he presented prototypes to companies such as Kramer, Ovation, and Yamaha, but did not receive satisfactory offers in return.

This episode is a crucial part of the history of PRS, which has evolved into a global presence in the electric guitar market over the past four decades.

Original Strategy and Initial Approaches

According to Smith, his initial strategy was to offer original designs to reputable manufacturers, thereby avoiding the complications involved in launching his own business. He recalls constructing prototypes that met the specifications requested by certain companies and delivering these models directly to interested executives.

Despite receiving some isolated praise for the quality of specific features in his instruments, the commercial proposals he received were deemed weak or nonexistent. This scenario applied to well-known brands such as Kramer, which was at that time one of the largest makers in the rock guitar scene, as well as other industry giants.

Artist Endorsements and Their Impacts

In the early years of his journey, Smith gained attention from prominent musicians, including Carlos Santana, Al Di Meola, and Howard Leese. He noted that artists such as Di Meola even encouraged manufacturers to take Smith’s designs into consideration, yet these efforts did not translate into direct commercial success.

Smith recounted that, even with these industry connections, major companies showed little inclination to pursue partnerships with him. The lack of interest directed at his work was a significant factor in his decision to invest in the creation of his own brand.

Establishment of PRS Guitars

After experiencing several fruitless attempts to collaborate with established companies, Smith resolved to found PRS Guitars in the mid-1980s. This company has since earned worldwide recognition. From its humble beginnings as a small workshop, PRS has grown into one of the foremost names in electric guitars, offering a range that includes high-end models, affordable series, and collaborations with contemporary artists.

A Shift in Strategy

Smith’s journey illustrates a strategic shift: transitioning from offering designs to third parties to establishing a distinctive identity within the industry. Four decades later, PRS stands as a solidified presence in studios and stages worldwide, with products that encompass a diverse array of styles and price points.
